    Inside Big Canyon’s Gates
By Natalie Raney, Special to the Independent

Set in a cozy enclave northeast of Newport Beach’s Fashion Island, the Big Canyon neighborhood is threaded by a lush championship golf course and an abundance of fragrant trees, mild breezes, and low-key ambiance that make it a sweetly tranquil retreat for residents. The community was established in 1972 about a year after the opening of Big Canyon Country Club’s championship golf course. The 24-hour guard gated neighborhood with two entries off San Joaquin Hills Road has approximately 500 homes. They include some 225 luxury townhomes ranging in size from 1,800 to 1,400 square feet and 274 single-family residences of 2,800 to 8,000 square feet, including many single level homes. The architectural style is mostly traditional, with some contemporary and Mediterranean styled homes for variety. There are no Mello Roos tax assessments and the association dues for single family residences are very low, about $225 a month, while dues at the meticulously maintained townhomes range from $400 to $500 a month. The community’s amenities are plentiful, including two parks, a baseball diamond, basketball and volleyball courts, toddler’s playground, and lots of glorious open space. Membership in the private Country Club is separate, but includes dining, a large swimming pool complex, tennis, golf, and special programs for kids in summer. The configuration of neighborhoods complements Big Canyon’s naturally tranquil setting. Lot sizes are very generous, from 9,000 to 27,000 square feet for single family homes, leaving plenty of privacy and space. While the beautiful trees and gorgeous landscaping make Big Canyon feel a world apart, it is actually centrally located, just minutes to the beach and John Wayne Airport.
