Decorating your home is exciting, but it can also be a little overwhelming and daunting. Orange County designer Wendy Blackband of Blackband Design is giving us a series of tips to help make the process manageable, fun and successful, allowing you to create a home you love to live in.

Tip #3

Once a purpose for the room is defined, and you have decided on the emotions and feelings you want the space to evoke, then the fun begins! This next step is what I call “visioning,” when you start exploring the potential style of the room and breaking down the elements that appeal to you. Spend some time going through your favorite home magazines and retail catalogues, and collect images that make you smile and draw you in. Choosing images that are as similar as possible to your own space, in terms of ceiling height, room dimensions, window size and placement, and features (such as a fireplace), will help immeasurably with envisioning your own space. Really examine these images to identify what really speaks to you. I recommend creating a style binder that is organized into categories: furniture, accessories, windows, lighting, flooring, artwork, fabrics, linens, pillows, etc. Grouping these photos will allow you to really recognize and articulate the specific elements and styles that reflect your personal taste and help you develop the design that you really want. This is homework that is fun and it will pay off with a beautiful room you will love for years to come!
